A brief background of Orgyen Menla (Guru Rinpoche’s manifestation as Medicine Buddha)
Orgyen Menla, the Healing Guru of Uddiyana, is Guru Rinpoche appearing in the aspect of Bhaishajyaguru (Medicine Buddha). Appearing bright blue, holding supreme medicine and alms-bowl, and wearing a hat, undergarment, gown and cloak, Orgyen Menlha is the Buddha of wisdom, longevity and medicine. He is the combined essence of all Buddhas. He foresaw that in this period where Dharma deteriorates, people driven by the desire of disturbing emotions would experience suffering hugely. To liberate beings from pandemics and natural disasters, Guru Rinpoche vowed to manifest as Orgyen Menla.
The practice of Orgyen Menla combines the blessings and power of Guru Rinpoche and Medicine Buddha to bring powerful healing and dissolve all varieties of emotional, physical and mental illness. It is particularly effective in pacifying epidemics, other sicknesses, suffering and negative influences and is also beneficial for longevity and wisdom.
If one prays to Orgyen Menla, the destructive forces of the imbalance of four elements are overcome by accomplishing Orgyen Menla. This is possible because Medicine Buddha (Healing Buddha) is no different from Guru, and Guru is no different from the primordial purity and perfection of one’s own awareness.
All internal, external and secret obstacles and diseases are the results of one’s own confused state of existence. Praying, meditating and reciting the mantra of Ogyen Menla not only cure diseases and suffering at a relative level, but also lead to the realization of ultimate wisdom. Thus, we can completely go beyond suffering.
